Announcing a Samba server to Windows

written at: 2024-06-21

For some reason, a Samba file server and it's services are not always properly announced to the network neighborhood in Windows (I hate Windows, but sometimes you need it). Avahi should be enough in most cases, but a lot of times you need a extra daemon for that.

The program works just fine and does what it is supposed to do, but sometimes i still get strange errors, eg. shares not being available at first click. If i find a solution to this, i'll most certainly update this article.

The documentation should be enough to get it installed. Just remember to open these ports on your firewall:

  • udp/3702
  • tcp/5357

Also remember that the program just announces, it does nothing else!
