Announcing a Samba server to Windows

written at: 2024-10-26

For some reason, a Samba file server and it's services are not always properly announced to the network neighborhood in Windows. Avahi should be enough in most cases, but a lot of times you need a extra daemon for that. The program works just fine and does what it is supposed to do, but sometimes i still get strange errors, eg. shares not being available at first click.

If i find a solution to this, i'll most certainly update this article.

The documentation should be enough to get it installed. Just remember to open these ports on your firewall:

  • udp/3702
  • tcp/5357

Also remember that the program just announces, it does nothing else!
